New Profession:

So, are we playing Guild Fortress 2 now?

Reads almost identical to the Gadgeteer in Mythos too.
That class seems to be spreading through fantasy mmo world.

It's a bit awkward in a mostly-fantasy-ish setting. I'm sure the class will be fun to play, but so far it seems to clash a bit with the rest.

As for other news, NCSoft seems convinced we'll have a beta in the second half of 2011. Since it wasn't said by anet I don't take it as gospel, but it would be rather nice.

i was really anxious for this new profession, but this was nothing of what i was expecting.
the grenades and the mines look really fun, but the turrets really turn me off.
it definitely seems to add a whole new steampunk feel to the game.

if the class looked more like a gunslinger type i would have definitely picked it as my main profession. but those turrets.....

Hey guys, I've had a look and I think it is a good idea that they've taken this new steam punk element on board in Guild Wars 2. Be honest, do you really want to play the same game over again? They needed to change it to keep it interesting, fresh and relevant. Let's face it, the game is set 250 years after Eye of the North, it would show a complete lack of integrity to pretend the world wouldn't have changed and that technology wouldn't have developed.

Also, me and my partner like the hand-crank on the turret :D

Frankly, I agree with Ellers on this. I was initially a bit concerned, but it's been 250 years. It took our society 60 years to go from learning how to fly to landing on the moon. The level of advancement feels right to me.

I've nothing against the inclusion of guns, landmines, explosives, giant mechanical robots (which gw1 already has, even if they are magical).

But a class that relies on such things seems very artificial to me. I'll just carry a huge supply of machine parts to build a mechanical turret around, that's a good way to fight!

It just doesn't feel as natural as the rest. The thief uses guns as a primary weapon, that's fine with me. A class using grenades/explosives in adition to other more "normal" activities, too. A class that relies only on these and then has those silly turrets... Nah. My brain doesn't accept that as well. It does feel too TF2. Between the engineer and the commando, I'd take the commando.

(Minus air support, possibly. :D )

i cant agree with varda more. cant really get over the turrets.
truth be told they are nothing more than what spirits were for the ritualist in GW1.
after some introspection i suppose i wanted/expected the engineer to be less of an "engineer" and more of a cowboy, gunslinger kind of profession, and the turrets throw all that in the complete opposite direction into more of a defensive, controller kind of profession.

of course, this is all subject to change after we get to learn and experience the profession.
so for now, yeah, i guess i'd take the commando over the engineer aswell!

(including air support, obviously!)

It's actually 40 minutes, as there's a part 2 of the video. Excellent find, Kiv.

I'm hoping the demo time at the eurogamer convention thing will be at least as long as that.

TotalBiscuit & Izzy have a go at PvP, showing off the Engineer, flamethrows and maybe more interestingly, falling off stuff, no invisible walls like in GW:

edit: And as I watch, the dead rangers pet in resurrecting him.

http://www.arena.net/blog/dragon

MoB blog, of which the most interesting para is:

"We recently finished our first closed beta test, and we’re now ready to hold progressively larger events. In February we’ll invite select press to participate in beta testing, and in March and April we’ll aggressively ramp up the size of our beta test events so that many of you will have a chance to participate. And of course, this all leads to the release of Guild Wars 2 later this year."

videos and articles started popping everywhere and everyone seems to be really excited about it.

me, on the other hand, am trying not to watch any videos. i want to experience stuff first hand by myself. its tough forcing a media blackout on yourself though :(

There's a few articles mentioning the gem store web page is now available, showcasing some of the items that can be purchased with the gems (which you can buy for real-money or hope someone buys with real money so you can buy them in game?). I can't get the direct link to it to work, though.

https://gemstore.ncplatform.net/

Here's an article with a screenshot, anyhow. http://www.guildwarsinsider.com/guild-w ... ine-store/

the link still seems to be down.

the store was available in the BWE, i ended up getting the free 2000 gems near the end of the event. sadly it seems they wont transfer to between BWE's :(

i didnt look too much into it, but it seemed to be mostly XP and Karma boosts. Having to buy the keys to open the chests that you got along the way was very annoying though.
